The Princess of Wales's Annual Yuletide Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Charity Helpers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.
The sizable congregation will enjoy a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from stars like award-winning actors.
Focusing on Love and Generosity
The focus of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.
Attending the event are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.
A Steady Comeback
The royal has been undertaking her own measured re-emergence to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Performance and Potential
Those coming to the Abbey can listen to young musicians backed by the charitable trust Future Talent, established in part by the Duchess of Kent to widen access to instrumental training.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been helped by the trust, with grants helping towards instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at the concert.
"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.
A Sisterly Duo
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.
Among the guests will be people from various age groups.
That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a young hero award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to collect donations for food banks.
Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts
The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
Taking to the stage will be recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."
This annual carol service will be televised and shown on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
