The Fifth Toy Story Film Teaser Pits The Beloved Duo Against a Digital Device
Exactly 30 anniversary since the original Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a leading film company and introducing viewers to iconic figures like Woody (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the plot but keeping fans curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys
The preview shows Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — receiving a latest plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the toys appear to consider it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (the actress), journeying with a fair and helping prize toys find good homes.
Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have come back with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Continuity from the Previous Film
Fortunately, some elements are continuing from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the insignia attached to her shirt.
It is hoped she is still the driving force among the toys.
Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
