Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
