Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture toward Fans
The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at fans during a recent game at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

The incident follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team traded star defensive player Parsons to the Packers.
