Can You Crack It? That Overlooked Dutch Creation That Forged the Modern World
One can find numerous contenders to claim the designation as “planet’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to the automated timber mill invented through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Before mechanised sawing, constructing a modest merchant vessel necessitated around 10 sawyers working over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered sawmills, an identical quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Thanks to this rapid automated cutter, that converted timber into planks using almost no manual labor, the Dutch were able to build vessels more quickly compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands maritime, economic and cultural dominance across Europe and the globe.
The First Genuine Industrial Device
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial authentic factory machine.” A windmill turned a wheel. A single part transformed the rotary movement into vertical action to power the saw. Another component changed that same rotary motion into a lateral movement advancing the log to the blade. A geared mechanism moved the log forward a measured step each stroke.
“Each element seemed simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to combine them so they acted within a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing with each downward stroke while advancing on every upward motion. It was an astonishingly intelligent application of basic parts.”

Design a machine which converts rotary movement into vertical motion. You have these items only: A rotating disc. Two pins. Two bars. A “guide”, which is a tube or housing through which a single the bars can slide snugly. (Consider that it is possible to mount components on a base, so that the parts don’t collapse.)
